After months and months of pause, Major League Soccer is announcing its comeback. The second week of July 2020, or to be precise 8th of July is the big date for the MLS is Back tournament. The pre-season tournament will start off in Orlando and once it ends the MLS fans could expect the beginning of a regular season. The new tournament will be played by six groups of the MLS league. This year’s season will kick off with this tournament after months of delay. The MLS is Back Tournament 2020 has a great schedule that will entertain the spectators almost every day. Moreover, the audience will be able to stream the events scheduled from 9 am, 8 pm, and 10:30 pm EST. So, after a busy day at work, all the MLS fans will be able to watch the games in the evening.

As far as some general tournament rules are concerned, clubs will be able to make five substitutions in one match. On the other hand, the teams will have to decide on a maximum of three occasions to make substitutions throughout the tournament. Another tournament rule is that the teams could name a matchday roster with 23 players. 

The Professional Referees Organization is entitled to supervise the video review for all matches. Finally, delays and postponements at any group stage will be finals after the 60th minute in case the final decision is that the match absolutely needs to be stopped.

Group Stage

The group stage will include all 26 teams in six groups, including the Western and Eastern Conference. Furthermore, the first one will have three groups and each of them will have four teams. Moving on to the Western Conference, it will consist of three groups with six teams and two groups with four teams. 

In the group stage period, each of the mentioned teams will play three matches. This stage of the tournament will last for 16 days in a row. Following the Group stage is the Knockout Stage, where the best two teams from each group and four top third-place teams will play. In case of a tie in this stage of the tournament, normal tie-breaking procedures will be applied.

Group Stage Tournament Draw

The group stage tournament draw will start on June 11th. Some of the known facts are that Nashville SC will be in the Eastern Conference throughout the whole 2020 MLS season. In addition, the host teams will be Orlando City SC and along with four semifinalists from the 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs, they will be group seeds. 

Seattle Sounders FC, Atlanta United, Toronto FC, and Los Angeles Football Club will be group seeds together with Real Salt Lake, while Orlando City SC will be the top seed.

Knockout Stage

After the group stage, the Knockout stage will follow starting with the Round of 16. Additionally, if there are ties in this stage it will be settled through a penalty kick shootout. The discipline penalties from the group stage won’t count in this stage, with the exception of red cards and second yellow cards. 

What is at Stake?

So, how important will this tournament be for the rest of the MLS 2020 season? First of all, all the group stage matches will count as regular-season points. As already mentioned, the champions will have a unique opportunity to win the CONCACAF Champions League spot for 2021. Finally, the tournament winning team will get a $1.1 million prize.
