The franchise was formed in 1995. It competed in the first-ever season of Major League Soccer in 1996 as the Dallas Burn. It changed its name to FC Dallas in 2004 as part of a major rebranding exercise. Then, it has continued in MLS with that name ever since the start of the 2005 season.
As the Dallas Burn, the franchise won the US Open Cup in only its second season in 1997. In 24 years it has only failed to make the playoffs on seven occasions.
