Synopsis of 2019 MLS Season

MLS looked a little different when the 2019 season started back on March 2nd. Most notable was the addition of the league’s 24th team, the expansion FC Cincinnati. As is the case with expansion teams in many sports, FC Cincinnati’s inaugural season wasn’t a success in terms of wins.

Their first win came in their 5th game and they would win just five more times en route to a 6-22-6 record. On the flip side, Los Angeles FC looks like the team to beat after posting 21-4-9 records. Their +48 goal differential was miles above the nearest competitor.

Another thing that changed heading into 2019 was the MLS soccer playoff format. Instead of having 12 teams qualify to compete for the MLS Cup, 2019’s MLS soccer playoffs will feature 14 teams. Los Angeles FC and New York City FC earned first-round byes after winning their respective conferences.

MLS Cup Playoff Odds

Enhance the thrill of the MLS soccer playoffs by placing a bet on MLS playoffs at a reputable online sportsbook. The great thing about the playoffs is that anything can happen. Sure, there are a couple of teams that are better positioned from a statistical standpoint. However, the odds indicate that those teams are far from being sure things. Consider all the angles before placing a bet on MLS playoffs.

Prior to heading into the Conference Semifinals, the average posted odds to win the MLS championship game looked like this:

  • Los Angeles FC +150
  • New York City FC +400
  • Atlanta United +800
  • Philadelphia Union +1200
  • Seattle Sounders +1200
  • Minnesota United +1600
  • LA Galaxy +2000
  • New England Revolution +2000
  • New York Red Bulls +2000
  • Real Salt Lake +2000
  • D.C. United +2500
  • Portland Timbers +2500
  • Toronto FC +2500
  • FC Dallas +4000

With the LA Galaxy knocking off Minnesota in a close match, the second-round bracket is set and eight teams remain.

Bet MLS Playoffs: Odds For Western Division

With their bye, Los Angeles FC had to wait for the outcome of the LA Galaxy and Minnesota United first-round match. With LA Galaxy’s win, MLS soccer playoff fans can look forward to a Western Conference Semifinal bout featuring two LA-based teams. On paper, this matchup seems a little lopsided in Los Angeles FC’s favor.

However, the LA Galaxy got the better of Los Angeles FC during the regular season. This makes them an attractive option for those who like picking underdogs when they bet on MLS playoffs. The Galaxy posted a 3-2 victory in their first meeting in July and then earned a 3-3 draw in August. Expect Los Angeles FC to enter this contest as a favorite but don’t expect the Galaxy to roll over. They’re a live dog.

The Western Conference’s number 2 seed will face the number 3 seed. Only three points separated Real Salt Lake and the Seattle Sounders during the regular season. The Sounders squeaked out a narrow 1-0 victory over Real Salt Lake in April, but Real Salt Lake returned the favor with a sound 3-0 win in August. Oddsmakers should make the Sounders a small favorite. Nevertheless, a strong finish to the season and a round one win versus Vancouver might give Real Salt Lake an edge in momentum.

Bet on MLS Playoffs: Odds For Eastern Conference

New York City FC certainly appears poised for an appearance in the MLS final game. New York will have their hands full with a feisty Toronto FC club that routed them in March. Toronto also earned a 1-1 draw on the road in September. After hammering D.C. United 5-1 in round one, Toronto is a very dangerous opponent for New York to be facing. Toronto will surely draw its share of betting action. And righteously so.

In the other Eastern Conference Semifinal card, second-seeded Atlanta United faces off against the third-seeded Philadelphia Union. This should also be a tightly fought battle. Both teams ended the regular season with just three points separating them.

Their quests for a trip to the MLS final game didn’t start convincingly as both teams barely beat inferior opponents. Still, they both got the job done. The winner of this game could attract plenty of wagers from those who like to bet on MLS playoffs. The winner’s road to the MLS championship would appear easier if New York City FC gets bounced.

MLS Cup 2018

One of the best MLS betting tips is that it doesn’t always pay to bet on MLS playoff favorites. Many of those who bet on MLS soccer playoff favorites last year were left with a sour taste in their mouths. This was especially true in the Western Conference where the dogs absolutely mauled the favorites.

Perhaps the most vicious dog was the Portland Timbers. As the Western Conference’s fifth seed, they started their run to the MLS final game by knocking off FC Dallas. Then, they stunned the second-seeded Seattle Sounders before sending Sporting Kansas City packing. Unfortunately, they ran out of steam in the MLS championship game against Atlanta FC.

Coincidentally, Atlanta United entered the playoffs with +333 odds to win the 2018 MLS Cup. Hopefully, those who chose Portland as their bet on MLS playoffs winners heeded on of the other important betting tips: It’s sometimes worth it to hedge your bets. Of course, of all the betting tips you can get, not exceeding your wagering limit is probably the most sage.
